VelvetPuffin is a new Web site that brings together Social Networking and Instant Messaging. We take all the coolest features of social networking like photos, video, blogging, and a new feature "polling" and throw them into IM. Videos can be accessed and pulled from sites like YouTube, Google Videos, and Metacafe; and photos can be accessed and pulled from Flickr! On VelvetPuffin, you can access your buddy lists from IM services like AOL, MSN, on Yahoo! Messenger all in one place, making it easy to stay connected with all of your friends! Also, to make sure that your social networking experience does not miss a beat, VelvetPuffin works on your mobile phone, making it even easier to update your friends about your day or show them a funny picture. VelvetPuffin travels with you!

Singtel Launches VelvetPuffin

Hey all,
We have an exciting piece of news to share - SingTel has launched VelvetPuffin to its base of mobile users. After months of hard work, we are glad that the partnership is off the grounds.
SingTel is the largest operator in Southeast Asia with an aggregate number of 124 million mobile subscribers in the region, including its associates. This is the largest mobile customer base in Asia outside of China.
SingTel users can download VelvetPuffin from ideas.singtel.com. The service works on Java 2 enabled handsets.
We observed that many of you use more of the service when on the go. There is time to kill while traveling and what better way to do that than connecting and sharing with your friends.
We want to make it easier for you to use VelvetPuffin mobile and our partnership with SingTel is a step towards that direction.

The premise behind creating VelvetPuffin was to offer a seamless and integrated social networking experience across different mediums (web, desktop and mobile).
The fabric of social networking is communication and sharing and the most obvious manifestation of that is Instant Messaging (IM).
Our IM roster is our contact list and social network. It has the friends we love to connect with to chat and share.
We thought it would be cool to combine instant messaging with social networking and that defines our approach.
We use the IM interface to invoke social networking functionalities such as chat, blog, poll, photo and video sharing amongst others.
We were users of existing social networking and IM services but were frustrated with silo approaches and the lack of cohesive extension across different mediums.
Channeling our frustrations positively, we set about finding a solution which led to the birth of VelvetPuffin.
Our mission is to be different and unique and offer an integrated experience across various mediums, so we've integrated instant messaging, polling, video sharing, photo sharing and blogging all on one site that's accessible on your desktop and/or mobile phone.
We are the first social networking service that truly goes beyond the desktop (because let's face it, we live our lives on the go, and we don't want anyone to have desktop envy!)
With our mobile service, there are no compromises. You can do everything that you do with your desktop on your mobile!

We are a month old! The service is off to a good start and adoption has been encouraging. Media, blogger and user communities have been great about sharing ideas and improvements and we are definitely incorporating a lot of what we have heard back. Thank you, and please keep the feedback coming.
I had been racking my head to figure how I should start the ball rolling.... and then it dawned on me....What better start than one that answers the most pressing question of all.
VelvetPuffin? What's with the name? We get this question from almost everyone we communicate with. Unfortunately for those of you expecting some profound meaning or significance, you're going to be disappointed - There is none!!!! The name is a combination of 2 random words and does not translate to anything. Submissions on a more interesting explanation of the name are welcome!
As you guessed, we brainstormed on several names before settling on VelvetPuffin. The name had to be intriguing and have no prior association. Of course, dotcom availability was non-negotiable.
VP is multi-faceted and it means different things to different people. Our name had to capture that essence and the imagination of our users. It's working.... People are killing themselves to figure what possessed me to name the service and I have heard so really funny guesses, but I will leave that to a different post.
So back to the service the month ahead will be focused on our desktop and mobile service, stabilization, the addition of exciting features and growing the VelevtPuffin community.
