awards and readings

Hello people. Haven't been around lately, but that's because I've been buys WINNING STUFF.

1st place award for nonfiction in the Eastern College Consortium for "The Skinny"
Otterbein College Single Author Chapbook winner for my academic/nonfiction essay "Finding Shakespeare"
award for fiction in the Quiz and Quill awards for my short story "Letters From Your Brother"

I will be reading portions from both my essays and my short story at the Quiz and Quill awards, Thursday, May 29th 2008 on the Otterbein College campus in front of Towers Hall. I doubt any internet people will come, but hey, who says ya can't?

I'm just excited that through all of thewse winnings, I've won $300 in total. I know it's not much but HEY, it's probably more than what you got for you short story, non? I'm planning on getting a tattoo of a quill dripped in ink about to write on an unfurled bit of parchment. I'm planning on leaving the parchment blank to be filled in later in my life.

shakespeare essay

In my typical fashion, I am taking the road less traveled. Thanks to my flexible Shakespeare professor, I have been granted a reprieve from the normal, utterly boring 7-10 page literary analysis paper. Instead I opted to write a personal essay detailing my search for Shakespeare the man, the writer and the myth. My purpose is to make oil and water of the information available to us about Shakespeare. I also want to connect with his plays in a way that rarely happens anymore. I want to look at them with fresh, unbiased eyes.

That being said, I'd love advice, references, ideas, and encouragement. Oh, I know this sounds so very academic, and it IS. But that doesn't mean there is no heart or soul in it. I identify as an academic-in-training. I hate to see people run screaming the other way from intimidating academic projects. All of the writing you're doing right now, the style you are currently exploring, the ideas and themes you love, all come to you on behalf of academics.
