‘Less is more’. That’s the starting point from where Dog Called Phenix set off in May 2006. Three guys armed with two guitar amps, two bass amps, two mics, a drum kit and a sampler, you could question the word ‘less’. Interpret it this way: They have mastered the use of their kit very effectively.
Dog Called Phenix is not just a band to Keimpe, Guido and Robin. It also serves an important function. It’s where they accommodate and deal with their fears, anger and frustrations. A kind of therapy, to keep them in good spirits during their ordinary lives and prevents them from acting out what they do on stage in ‘real’ life. The result: tight, up-tempo and cutting music, with lyrics to match, from the ultimate (under)dogs.
Dog Called Phenix may seem a pup, but they are definitely not wet behind the ears. In fact, the opposite is true. All three are former State of Eye members and have set foot on many a stage, including Paradiso, Melkweg, P60, Atlantis, LVC and Merleyn, just to mention a few. They’ve also had the privilege to tour through France and Denmark, so you can’t say they are ‘green’.
But a new band means a clean slate and that slate needs to be filled again. After all, a trouble shared is a trouble halved. With a relatively short warm-up period behind them, the guys are itching to get back on stage… and when it comes to gigs, let’s just say the band wants….more!
