The Ancient Practice of Piracy  Word
The Ancient Practice of Piracy
by Cortney Ives

A found poem from the Dec. 1998 issue of the National Geographic article 'Crossroads of Asia South China Sea' by Tracy Dahlby.

Today's sea robbers use speedboats, radar,
videotape recorders, personal computers, or other luxury goods.

There is occasional violence.
A distraught crew
hurried to their master’s cabin
a gaping bullet hole in his head.

So it was with reduced zeal
that ship was going to Hong Kong, too.

"Meiyou!---No Pirates!" he said,
with a sweep of his hand,
a greenish glow.
Fore and aft, spectral plumes of water
to keep pirates at bay.

Locking myself in my cabin,
the night passed without heroism.

"Oh, there is no romance left in this sea life!"
Ships with teakwood decks,
live monkeys, orangutans, and snakes.

"Oh, there were famous storms."
In the nail-biting days.

Gone are the ships with magical names,
the seven course breakfasts,
cut and the darkness of the open sea.

that bitter look the mothers give me

12/14/2006 at 10:35 AM

I had written a big fat entry about my impending one year anniversary at the intentional community where I live and some thoughts on living here as a communitarian and as a writer. The computer ate it. Like the way I eat babies for breakfast; crunch, slurp, gone.

Now I know what that bitter look the mothers give me is all about.

Regardless, here’s a less interesting post about my internet routine. As if anyone ever cared about another person's internet routine, unless of course, they were trying to get laid by said person and thought it could enlighten them and show some long, undiscovered niche of their psyche. Now I have you all on baited breath, waiting for me to reveal my inner secrets. Score!

Today I preformed my biweekly comics routine. ("What," you exclaim,” that doesn't sound like sexy inner turmoil!?" Sucker.)

I've got to start out a little heavy on the side of geekiness. With 'WTF Comics' (www.wtfcomics.com). Yes, its Everquest based, and there are cute wood elves with nice booties running around, but don't give up on me yet. The characters are well developed, the story and action are engaging, and the art work is good.

Now to redeem myself with the Perry Bible Fellowship. (www.thepbf.com) The guy who does these is from the Rochester area (good old western NY) and hilariously creative and irreverent. A new gem weekly.

For true web comic satisfaction I've got to catch up on some Something Positive. (www.somethingpositive.net) Randy once ran a D&D game at a con I was at. I played a greater gelatinous cat (al la choo choo bear) that nearly destroyed my entire party. What can I say; I thought I was a chicken?

Lastly, these kids speak my language. (www.asofterworld.com) It's a secret language that was discovered simultaneously on April the 2nd, 1989. I found my copy next to a dusty Lego under the couch.

glad you like the name. it was almost the name of my last band until we went with baby versus giant. it's part of a quote from "brave new world" if you've ever read it. and i just realized that this reply is almost a month late. better late than never?
